Less Than Jake – Pezcore
welcome back to the Skaject folks! we’re listening to Florida band Less Than Jake’s debut record, Pezcore, this week!
alright Less Than Jake is another Skaject 1.0 veteran, and they were actually the very first band i listened to as part of that version of the Skaject – they are one of my favorite bands, and i am def gonna have a hard time staying objective here. i dont mention it upfront because my thoughts in Pezcore are particularly glowing, but because ive got some very set feelings about this band, haha.
Pezcore is a very strong start for their discography. there’s a lot that’s rough around the edges – Shotgun and Liquor Store are not complex tracks, for example – but they bridge a really strong and infectious energy to this record. two of the tracks, Johnny Quest Thinks We’re Sellouts and Jen Doesn’t Like Me Anymore, will appear again in more polished forms on Losing Streak, and i think both of those are much better with a second pass. Johnny Quest could probably stand on its own in this form, but i would like Jen a lot less if this was the only version.
its also funny that a lot of the “leaving this town” stereotyping is very true about this record, haha. from Throw the Brick to Where the Hell is Mike Sinkovich, so much of this is just wanting to get started with life, and yknow i get it.
this definitely isnt a huge hidden gem or breakout masterpiece, but i do find it really charming and its really cool seeing their sound developing and them working through the rough edges.
faves – Liquor Store, My Very Own Flag, Shotgun, Throw the Brick, Blindsided, Boomtown
