this week for the weekly review, i’m checking out the 2018 release from Donny Benét, The Don.

The Don kicks off with a funky, bass-y, catchy track, Working Out. the saying but also not saying style of the track is extremely fun. very good opener. Love Online’s p good too, but a lil less my flavor. the bass work on this track is delightful but the vocal performance is a lil weaker imo, and the track theme is p cute. You’re Too Good is a fun listen for sure, but not one of my faves. Santorini is a more uptempo, moodier track. very fun listen, the chorus here is really nice, and that solo, oooooooh yeah. Reach the Top is def a sleeper track for me, lotta fun stuff happening in this song. Konichiwa is lighter – im digging the vibes overall, with the bass just going away at it under all the lighter tones and chords, with Benét’s voice hovering over it all. plus, man this record really knows how to let loose for a solo, that sax slaps so fucking hard. Night In Rome is the like, i dunno describing this track has “hard” feels wrong, but the synths are the mist intense on this track, this is like getting close to like a Kavinsky track. Just Leave Him is probably the weakest track here for me – by no means bad just fails to engage me, which is a bit of a shame for the closing tracj.

faves – Working Out, Konichiwa
dislikes –

this like, fun early 80s pop sound is incredibly fun, over the whole record. the bass, the synths, the saxes, the drums, its all great performances and some really excellent sounds.

there’s an extremely fun sense of lightheartedness through the record’s lyrics too. a lot of these tracks deal in romance or seduction but in a very tongue-in-cheek way, and its really fun to just slip into the zone and fall away into the haze 80s and enjoy the fun.

really fun listen for sure!

The Don – 7/10
