hello all! before we jump into our next discography, we’ll be listening to the newest King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard record, released this year – Flight b741

it is wild to me that Flight b741 is King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s 26th record, and theyre still putting out really cool music. this record is heavy on the blues and boogie – plenty of harmonica, acoustic jams, and rambling vibes to be found here.

the absolute star of the album and lead single also highlights my favorite part of the record – every band member takes a turn on vocals on Le Risque and there’s a huge variety in who takes vocal duties across the album. it leads to some really cool sequences and is just a very fun detail. it’s also sandwiched between what are definitely the “core” of the record. Hog Calling Contest seems to be largely about embodying different aspects of a pig and dreaming for a kind of release when pigs fly, referencing the title of the record, and the title track directly talks about the feeling of taking that flight.

Mirage City opens the album with a rambling tale of an illusory paradise, with musical segments covering the whole journey of discovery and disillusionment. Antarctica’s chorus is incredibly catchy. i REALLY like the intro and opening of Sad Pilot – the guitars here pkay off each other really well, and Joey Walker’s vocals are buttery smooth over the bluesy jam. Daily Blues is a rambling, extended outro for the record, summarizing a kind of discontent borne of a polarized environment and a search for a way to course correct. ive seen a read of the album title that “741” is “seven for one”, a nod to the increased presence of each band member on the record and a kind of call for unity, and thats generalized well here in this closing track.

on the whole, a very fun album and a very good listen.
