Missio – I Am Cinco
long time no see Missio! we last checked out their I Am… EPs a few weeks ago, and since then theyve released a new album – I Am Cinco. lets see what they have in store!
interestingly (and perhaps obviously, given the title), I Am Cinco is 5 discs, each about EP-sized, where the first three discs are the EPs i reviewed last time. the last two discs represent the new material here. i wont rehash the first three discs – theyre presented in the same order as the EPs, in release order, so my experience of listening to all three at once was actually pretty accurate to listening to the first half of this album. potentially fortunately, the last two discs are both much more vibrant and much more my style.
Disc 4 opens with Rage, which sets the tone for these pretty well. melodic but tense verses break into some angrier and dark choruses – not quite as catchy as it feels like they’re shooting for, but a pretty good track. Fuck It keeps the darker energy, and Aztec Death Whistle borrows a ton of metal influences for a sound that works pretty well for them. The World Is Better When It’s Sick draws more on the dubsteppier influences, and Go Fuck Yourself ends the disc on a instrumental that opens a bit more closely to the other discs, until the hard rockier chorus. this disc is def I Am Angry.
Disc 5’s opener, Fall Into a Black Hole is aight, but i think the highlight from this section for me is Higher You Climb, borrowing just enough from aughts emo rock to hook me, haha. the last few tracks, Pulled Down Low and Time, dont really land for me.
i don’t know that these tracks dramatically alter my view of the songs here – i do enjoy a lot of what the disc 4 songs do, and i appreciate the variety they’ve provided here, but i think this is just fine for me.
I Am Cinco – 4/10
next week, we’ll be checking out a fresh Decemberists record that comes out this week before selecting a new discography to review!
