welcome back to the Skaject folks! this week we’re looking at two releases, and our first release is from LA band Fishbone. They got their start in 1979, before getting signed in 1983 and releasing their first EP, Fishbone, in 1985. let’s check it out!

okay i missed a line or two in Ugly and imagine my surprise when i found out this track is about good ol’ Ronny Reagan, president at the time of this EP’s release. absolutely shot my opinion of the song way up, and obvious in retrospect. great start. Another Generation is a very interesting track musing on what feels stupid to call culture war stuff, given the way the term has been used contemporarily, but i get how it would feel being in the counter-culture in Raegen-era America. i immediately gravitated towards Modern Industry. something about this track – the barrage of radio station acronyms, the sampling of radio sounds, plus it’s just so bright in what feels like a synthetic way, haha. Party at Ground Zero is eclectic, and frantic, and anxious in a loud and bombastic way. very neat track, with a lot of interesting movements and flourishes. hard to not dig this track and dance along with the apocalypse, haha. V.T.T.L.O.T.F.D.G.F. is a WILD track – i had to look up what the acronym stands for (Voyage to the Land of the Freeze-Dried Godzilla Farts), and so discovered why this song was written. Norwood “Fish” Fisher, the band’s drummer, heard about Holocaust deniers, and this song is the response. It creates a fictional conspiracy, and imagines a world where the US was denying their usage of nuclear weaponry in WWII and the devastation was caused by something else (godzilla farts). absolutely love the concept, and the resulting track is quite amusing. Lyin’ Ass Bitch is a really fun track – they bring a guest vocalist, Lisa Grant, to help describe a relationship being torn apart by a duplicitous friend. fun song!

YEAH this was a really fun EP. Fishbone shows a WILD energy and music sensibility here – these songs are eclectic and fun and funny! i had a great time here, and i DEF think this one’s worth checking out. i’ve heard a few Fishbone tracks before, so hearing this as the first entry really gets me excited to see how they develop from here.

Recriminations – 8/10
