welcome back to the Skaject folks! today we’re looking at 1970’s Moon Hop by Derrick Morgan!

A Night at the Hop opens the record here, and there’s some real fun energy on this track. some of the vocal deliveries get a little harsh here, but on the whole it’s a good listen. Oh Babe (Sick and Tired) brings similar energy on a much more low-key wavelength. Let’s Have Some Fun continues that mellower experience, on a more positive note. this track’s really pleasant – the beat’s laid back, and Morgan’s voice here is great. i don’t have strong feelings about Man Pon Moon. Just a Little Lovin’ is like, a more rock n’ roll style track, it’s neat. Moon Hop loops back around to what A Night at the Hop was doing, still a neat track. Derrick Pop the Top has some familiar lyrics, but if i have heard the track before i def haven’t heard this version. feels a little dubby with the way it’s been mixed. neat. Give Me Lovin’ is fine, and i feel similarly about The Story. This Ain’t My Life is a mellow jam – vocals here are great over a very easy-going beat. Wipe These Tears is a nice lil duet. our closing track here is Telephone, which is quite a catchy track, but lyrically is a lil possessive.

yeah this record’s alright indeed. some very laid-back grooves, some excellent vocals throughout, it’s a bummer i wasn’t hooked more by any of it. either way, a very nice listen.

Moon Hop – 5/10

next up we’re gonna be checking out another 1970 record, Desmond Dekker’s You Can Get It If You Really Want!
