Weekly Review: Mastodon – Crack the Sky
hey yall! this week, for the weekly review, we’re listening to Mastodon’s 2009 record, Crack the Skye.

ill admit, i dont have tons to say about this record. Crack the Skye is about a boy astral projecting, meeting Rasputin, and facing quite a bit of danger in the astral plane trying to make it back to his body. i dont think the concept is bad or poorly executed or anything, but it doesnt do a ton to elevate my appreciation for the album.
what does is some really really well performed hard rock and psych/prog influenced songs. they absolutely NAIL the dreamy, floating feeling on this without giving up much in terms of intensity. it may surpise regular readers to know that my fave song off here is one of the longer tracks – The Czar, a four part track about Rasputin’s life, is hands down my favorite part of the album. i do also gotta shout out the closer, The Last Baron – really fun prog segments here that really remind me of Rush in a fun way, and some neat reprises/nods to earlier parts of the album.
on the whole, very fun listen!
faves – The Czar

i’ll be back next week to listen to Sade’s Love Deluxe– in the meantime, please let me know what album you’d like me to review below!
