welcome back to the Skaject folks! let’s check out Honey, I’m Homely, the next release from Dance Hall Crashers!

i found Lost Again, the lead track from this album, a few years ago, and then spent the better part of two weeks with the song on loop. if i categorized tracks into a “super loved” category, it would be an instant slam dunk. i love this song so much. the pacing, the melodies, the rise and fall, the way the DHC’s dual vocals are on display weaving in and out of harmonies, the chorus, it’s all so so tasty. cannot overstate how much i love this one.

i was never super impressed with the rest of the album – i did have songs i liked from it, but every time i went back to the full album or the DHC’s other albums, i always went right back to Lost Again. i think that’s a bit of a disservice to this album, and especially after hearing what came before, this record is an incredibly polished package.

thematically, this record has a lot of “hot and cold” tracks – having, for example, All Mine, a very sweet track, wedged between Will Tomorrow Ever Come and Salted, both of which are Relationship Problems songs, is kinda funny. thats not the only topic – Stand By is about hypocrisy from figures of authority, and Big Mouth is an incredibly funny version of a subtweet. someone got burned by a gossip for SURE.

musically, this is a pretty solid blending of poppy ska with some rockabilly influences, and the combo is incredibly good. again, the vocal harmonies between Elyse Rogers and Karina Deniké are an absolute delight.

glad i revisited this record with a bit more focus, since i think there’s a lot to enjoy here, but honestly i really gotta go back to the top and say you should listen to it if only for Lost Again.

faves – Lost Again, Salted, Whiskey & Gin, Cold Shower
