hello all! we’re closing out the 70s in our Jethro Tull discography listen this week with Stormwatch!

reading up on this record, a lot of its compostion and writing was inspired by Ian Anderson’s newly purchased property on the Isle of Skye in Scotland – the opening track, North Sea Oil, immediately draws on that anxiety of living on or near extractive resources, the knowledge that it can bring prosperity, dependence, or ruin, depending. really strong opener and great song. i dont have many thoughts about Orion, but Home is quite sweet. Dark Ages and Flying Dutchmen form the meatiest parts of this record, at 9 and almost 8 minutes each. both are really neat tracks – i think i prefer Dark Ages, between the two, but theyre both solid. Warm Sporran feels a tad underwhelming where it is, and honestly feels like it woulda been more at home on Songs From the Woods.

in the end though, i feel fairly mediocrely on this one – as always, there’s some really shining moments here and there, but i think with a majority of the tracks here, i like them just fine.

faves – North Sea Oil, Dun Ringill
dislikes –

Stormwatch – 6/10
