hello all! we’re continuing our Jethro Tull listen with Songs From the Woods, released in 1977, which appears to form a sort of folk trilogy with our next two albums.

im really inclined to like Songs From the Woods – its got a very sweet, charming, and appropriately rustic opening song, and it really does deliver on the promise of the title. this does feel like songs from the wood.

but unfortunately, there’s not a ton here that pulls it above that very mild “like”, right? its part of why it rattled around in my brain. after several listens, i wasn’t able to pierce the surface of the record, so to speak. i dont need a record to be super deep, but it was definitely a shift that took some adjusting after the big string of hisly conceptual albums. its interesting going from tracks like Jack-in-the-Green to Ring Out, Solstice Bells a few songs later, but im less a fan of the latter. i like Velvet Green and Pibroch (Cap in Hand) movements’ – its nice to take the longer song to play a lot more with the space and the instrumentation. also, Beltane is a killer closer.

as i mentioned though, i think this record’s gonna sit at a solid “like” for me.

faves – Songs From the Woods, Beltane

Songs From the Woods – 6/10

next week, we continue the folk sounds with Heavy Horses.
