King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Oddments (From the Vault)
hey folks, welcome to some discography reviews. i’ve been writing music reviews for some friends in a discord server for a few years now in various forms, but i figured i’d like to get them all in a more centralized space, so here we are! this first series of reviews is a review of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s discography, starting in 2011 with Willoughby’s Beach and running right into 2021 with Butterfly 3000. this review was originally written in August 2021.
next up is Oddments, March of 2014. geeze do these guys ever take a break? (i know the answer is no, haha)
i really like the inserted sound effects and the way the drum and bass come in right as they end in Alluda Majaka, that’s such a great way to kick off the album. i got no right liking Stressin’ as much as i do, but its a damn good song. Vegemite is a fun song, and It’s Got Old is nice – i get why Stressin’ and It’s Got Old are broken apart by Vegemite, but they feel very similar. Work This Time is v sad. i can definitely see how it became like, their most listened to song on spotify. it is VERY hard to understand the lyrics in ABABcd. (it’s also very funny to see Work This Time’s 26 mil plays right next to ABABcd.’s 2k on spotify, haha). i really dig Sleepwalker. nice energy. Hot Wax has got some great licks, some good energy. Crying, Pipe-Dream, and Homeless Man In Addidas are all nice, very mellow tracks but i’m not big into them. Oddments is a very nice closeout but not super substantial.

overall, this is a nice collection of tracks, but while looking into it i realized this was a curated collection of the songs that were developed but not included on Float Along and 12 Bar Bruise, which makes sense. it’s paced well, some of the songs are really nice, but it def isn’t my fave of what we’ve heard so far.
