Jethro Tull – Heavy Horses
hello all! we’re listening to the next entry in Jethro Tull’s 70s folk trilogy of sorts – Heavy Horses, released in 1978!

Heavy Horses starts strong, tbh. …And the Mouse Police Never Sleeps is a strange, intense opener, weaving a dark picture of the daily tasks of a housecat. Acres Wild kicks a ton of ass. the mandolin/guitar here, the drums, the subtle flute accents, i dig this one a lot – i feel like Moths, in a few tracks, plays in the same space both lyrically and instrumentally but in a more mellow and lighthearted way. No Lullaby really emphasizes the ways this record weaves prog rock into the folkier sounds, even as it kinda slows the pace down – that is developed even further on the sweeping 8 minute centerpiece of the record, Heavy Horses.
i really like the darker tone here too – Songs From the Woods was a fairly light and airier album, on the whole, and this album skews darker. tracks like Moths are still brighter, but on the whole i enjoyed the more intense vibes on this record – i think, based on the songs i gravitated to, that i particularly liked this album’s more romantic takes – Acres Wild and Rover are both excellent additions to the record. very solid release.
faves – ..And the Mouse Police Never Sleeps, Acres Wild, Rover
dislikes –
Heavy Horses – 7/10
