The Mountain Goats – Beautiful Rat Sunset
morning folks! extra bonus update today because i missed the EPs when i was plotting out this discography, and that means i was skipping over this 1994 EP, Beautiful Rat Sunset. it was short enough that i figured i’d go ahead and add it to the reviews this week. let’s take a look!
Itzcuintli-Totzli Days is an incredibly strong start to this EP – the chorus really works here, and it’s nice to see the Bright Mountain Chorus on the song. New Star Song’s a very sad, very moving song. Song For Cleomenes is a largely spoken track, the tale of a corrupt Roman governor accompanied by some darker, brooding guitar. i think it works here – the fervor he whips into at the end feels like it’s been properly built to. Sendero Luminoso Verdadero references a Peruvian communist group who were mostly active in the 80s and 90s. i really really like this song – there’s a sense of things having been right once, but that moment being a bit too far out of reach. Song for Mark and Joel is fine. no thoughts on this one. Going to Maryland is also p nice. Seeing Daylight’s a solid track, but not really for me. Resonant Bell World closes us out with a very mysterious track – equal parts tension and marvel. neat.
faves – Itzcuintli-Totzli Days, Sendero Luminoso Verdadero
dislikes –
fun little EP. some bangers, but mostly some chiller songs. there’s an interestingly higher number of spoken components in these tracks, given what the last album has and what i know is ahead. either way, a solid release.
Beautiful Rat Sunset – 5/10
okay next, it’s Sweden for real.
