this week for the weekly review, i’m returning to dub musician Scientist, this time for his 1981 record Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires. let’s dig in!

we’re opening this time on The Voodoo Curse, a very mellow opening track and a nice tone-setter. i really like having this kinda stripped down track kick things off, it feels right. Dance of the Vampires really utilizes the vocal track well – the strong draw in into that strongly reverbed percussion and horn bit at the beginning, it’s real good. plus the rhythm on this track is excellent. speaking of interesting percussive work, Blood On His Lips delivers on that, it’s nice. Cry of the Werewolf is nice – it kinda goes in and out for me, personally. parts i really dig, and parts that leave me hanging a lil. Mummy’s Shroud works around it’s fantastic horn line and forms an excellent, excellent groove. massively good vibes. The Corpse Rises is a bit of a slow burner for me but i do like what it’s putting down. Night of the Living Dead is nice – on the whole a very pleasant listen but every time i start getting really into it the track backs way off, haha. Your Teeth In My Neck is a good track – Scientist def knows how to mix around and accent vocal tracks for sure. Plague of Zombies is short but very very sweet. Ghost of Frankenstein is an excellent closer – great way to put a lil capstone on the album

faves – Dance of the Vampires, Mummy’s Shroud, Plague of Zombies, Ghost of Frankenstein
dislikes –

man i dunno why i had such a drastically different reaction to this record versus Meets the Space Invaders, but i warmed up to these tracks real fast, and i just overall had a wonderful time with it. i think there’s a really strong variation between tracks on this one of more sparse compositions and mixes versus some very lush arrangements, and a lot of the more obvious reverb and other mixing effects feel like very well placed accents throughout, yknow? either way, there’s several of these tracks that were stellar, and the whole record experience was very nice.

Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires – 8/10

the selection for this week’s suggestion pool is another Scientist record, this time it’s the 2017 release from Machine Girl, …BECAUSE I’M YOUNG ARROGANT AND HATE EVERYTHING YOU STAND FOR. i’ll be back next Friday, October 14th for a review, and in the meantime, let me know what album you’d like me to review!
